Deployment of EQO Body Scanner at Tribhuvan International Airport
Installation of two EQO body scanners at Tribhuvan International Airport's arrival security checkpoint by Mahavir Shree International Pvt. Ltd.
Project Overview
Overview
Two EQO body scanners, manufactured by Smiths Detection, were installed by Mahavir Shree International Pvt. Ltd. at the arrival security checkpoint of Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu, Nepal. The scanners use millimeter-wave technology for automated, privacy-compliant passenger screening. The project, reference MSI-PRJ-73-123, was completed on May 11, 2024, with a project duration of one year.
Scope & Deliverables
- Installed two EQO body scanners at TIA's arrival security check-in area, each linked to a local operator station and a remote operator station.
- Configured VOIP headset communication between local and remote operators, with image-based targeting used to identify suspicious items on scanned passengers.
- Scanners operate using microwave illumination at 24.16 GHz in the Super High Frequency (SHF) band, wavelength approximately 13 mm, penetrating clothing while reflecting off the body's water content to detect concealed items.
- Detection covers metals, ceramics, plastics, and liquids.
- Carried out on-site infrastructure work: metal and aluminum fabrication and carpentry to partition separate male and female scanning areas, civil works to fit the equipment, and routing of power cables.
Outcome
The two scanners were commissioned at TIA's arrival security checkpoint, providing automated, privacy-compliant, gender-separated body screening with local-remote operator communication via VOIP headsets. The installation integrated the system into airport infrastructure not originally built for it. Regular training of customs personnel and scheduled maintenance of the equipment were identified as ongoing requirements to sustain operation of the system.
