Project Overview

Project Overview

This project involved the supply of Megger testing equipment for use in transmission line fault detection and substation commissioning activities. The supplied equipment was intended to support reliable testing, verification, and maintenance of high-voltage electrical infrastructure within the national transmission network.

The scope included advanced diagnostic and commissioning instruments such as transformer testing systems (TRAX), tan delta testing equipment, and relay testing kits. These tools are essential for ensuring accurate performance assessment, fault identification, and proper commissioning of critical substation and transmission line components, thereby supporting safe and reliable operation of the power system.

Objectives

The project was designed to achieve the following objectives:

• To enable accurate condition assessment of high-voltage assets such as transformers, CTs, VTs, and transmission lines

• To support efficient fault identification, localization, and troubleshooting in the transmission network

• To facilitate the proper testing and commissioning of protection and control systems using relay testing equipment

• To ensure reliable and standardized testing practices in accordance with NEA and IEC guidelines

• To enhance technical capability through equipment presentation, knowledge sharing, and hands-on site training

• To provide practical demonstration and guidance on equipment operation, testing procedures, and real-time application at the site level

Key Deliverables

The following systems, instruments, and services were supplied, demonstrated, and supported as part of the project:

Transformer & Substation Testing System (TRAX)

MEGGER TRAX multifunction transformer test system

• Used for winding resistance, turns ratio, impedance, and demagnetization testing

• Enabled detailed condition assessment of transformers and substation equipment

Tan Delta Testing System  (DELTA400)

MEGGER DELTA 4000 insulation diagnostic system

• Performed power factor (tan delta) testing for transformers and cables

• Supported the evaluation of insulation health and aging condition

Protection Relay Testing System (SMRT410)

MEGGER SMRT410 relay test set

• Used for testing, calibration, and verification of protection relays

• Covered overcurrent, distance, differential, and earth fault protection schemes

Overhead Line Fault Location System (OHLF)

MEGGER OHLF (TDR-based fault locator)

• Used for identifying and locating transmission line faults

• Detected open circuit, short circuit, and insulation faults for faster fault resolution

• Technical presentations, operational training, and hands-on demonstrations to support proper equipment usage and testing procedures

Challenges

The project involved several technical, operational, and field-level challenges during supply, demonstration, and deployment support of the testing equipment:

• Ensuring proper coordination for the deployment and demonstration of multiple testing equipment across different NEA field sites

• Providing effective hands-on training to different technical teams with varying levels of experience in testing equipment

• Coordinating logistics, site readiness, and availability of transmission and substation assets for practical testing sessions

• Ensuring safe handling and operation of high-voltage testing equipment during live demonstration environments

Impact

The deployment of Megger testing equipment, along with technical training and hands-on demonstrations, has significantly improved the overall testing and maintenance capability of the transmission and substation teams:

• Enhanced capability of NEA technical teams to perform accurate fault detection and diagnostics in transmission lines and substations

• Improved reliability and efficiency of transformer, relay, insulation, and line testing activities using equipment such as TRAX, DELTA, SMRT, and OHLF

• Reduced troubleshooting time through faster and more precise fault identification and analysis

• Strengthened the technical knowledge and operational confidence of field engineers through practical training and on-site demonstrations

• Improved quality and standardization of testing procedures in line with IEC practices

• Increased effectiveness of preventive maintenance and condition-based monitoring of critical power assets

• Better utilization of advanced testing technology, leading to improved system reliability and reduced outage duration

Conclusion

The project successfully delivered Megger testing equipment along with practical technical support, including on-site training and equipment demonstrations for NEA engineering teams. The implementation of key diagnostic tools such as TRAX, DELTA, SMRT, and OHLF has significantly strengthened the capability for transmission line fault detection, transformer testing, insulation assessment, and protection relay verification.

Through hands-on training and knowledge sharing, the project ensured effective understanding and proper utilization of the equipment in real field conditions. This has improved testing accuracy,  reduced fault diagnosis time, and enhanced overall maintenance efficiency across transmission and substation systems.

Overall, the project demonstrates the value of integrating advanced testing technologies with technical capacity building, resulting in improved system reliability. operational safety, and long-term strengthening of Nepal’s power transmission infrastructure.
