Project Overview

Project Name: Supply, Delivery, Installation and Commissioning of Ceilometer and Visibility and Present Weather Sensor at Rajbiraj and Manthali Airport
Project Ref.: SF-78-2353

The Supply, Delivery, Installation, and Commissioning of Ceilometer and Visibility and Present Weather Sensor at Rajbiraj and Manthali Airport project, commissioned by the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, enhances weather monitoring capabilities at both airports. Implemented between February 2022 and July 2022, the project focuses on deploying advanced sensors and associated infrastructure for accurate, real-time weather data collection.

Key Deliverables:

✓ Installation of combined visibility and present weather sensors at Rajbiraj and Manthali Airports.

✓ Deployment of ceilometers for precise cloud height measurement.

✓ Provision and setup of obstruction lights, all-in-one PCs, monitors, optical fiber cables, power cables, media converters, switches, and accessories.

✓ Implementation of self-diagnostic sensors with downward-looking forward scatter technology capable of differentiating precipitation types and measuring intensity and accumulation.

✓ Ensuring sensors support WMO 4680 standards, traceable calibration, and heating for icy conditions, along with mounts for existing meteorological masts.

✓ Optional field calibration kit for all-weather operations.

Impact:
This project significantly improves weather observation accuracy, supporting safer airport operations and enabling better decision-making for flight planning. The sensors’ advanced capabilities, including precipitation type differentiation and self-diagnostics, reduce risks of false readings and enhance operational reliability.

Conclusion:
By modernizing weather monitoring at Rajbiraj and Manthali Airports, this project strengthens Nepal’s aviation infrastructure and promotes enhanced safety and efficiency in airport operations.
