Supply, Delivery, Installation & Commissioning of Lightning Arrester and Counter System for Radar Stations
Supply, installation, and commissioning of a lightning arrester and counter system for radar stations at Tribhuvan International Airport and Bhattedanda EMSSR station.
Project Overview
Overview
Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), through the Tribhuvan International Airport Civil Aviation Office (TIACAO), commissioned the supply, delivery, installation, and commissioning of a lightning arrester and counter system for radar stations at Tribhuvan International Airport and the Bhattedanda EMSSR station, Sinamangal, Kathmandu, under reference SF-80-2827. The project ran over a duration of 3 months and reached completion on 8 September 2025. The system supports preventive maintenance of power supply and radar surveillance equipment — ASR, SSR, and MSSR systems — by protecting them against direct lightning strikes.
Scope & Deliverables
- Lightning air terminal, positioned to capture lightning discharge at a preferred strike point
- Mounting support (pole/mast) providing structural support for the air terminal
- Down conductor to transfer lightning energy safely to ground
- Lightning strike counter to record and monitor lightning events
- Earthing system for safe underground dissipation of lightning energy
- Installation covering radar surveillance equipment at Tribhuvan International Airport and the Bhattedanda EMSSR station
Outcome
The lightning arrester and counter system was installed and commissioned at the radar stations, providing lightning protection for ASR/SSR/MSSR radar surveillance equipment and associated power supply infrastructure at Tribhuvan International Airport and the Bhattedanda EMSSR station.
