Project Overview

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), through the Tribhuvan International Airport Civil Aviation Office (TIACAO), has initiated a vital project to enhance safety and reliability at critical radar stations. This project focuses on the supply, delivery, installation, and commissioning of a complete lightning arrester and counter system, ensuring the protection of essential air traffic surveillance equipment from lightning hazards.

Project Scope

The primary objective of this project is to aid preventive maintenance of power supply and radar surveillance equipment (ASR/SSR/MSSR systems) by providing a comprehensive lightning protection solution. The system is designed to minimize risks associated with direct lightning strikes, safeguarding both personnel and critical infrastructure.

The lightning protection system comprises the following major components:

✓ Lightning Air Terminal – Captures lightning discharge at a preferred point.

✓ Mounting Support (Pole/Mast) – Provides structural support for the terminal.

✓ Down Conductor – Safely transfers lightning energy to the ground.

✓ Lightning Strike Counter – Records and monitors lightning events.

✓ Earthing System – Ensures safe dissipation of lightning energy underground.

Significance of the Project

Radar systems at Tribhuvan International Airport and Bhattedanda EMSSR station are vital for ensuring safe and uninterrupted air traffic operations in Nepal. By installing a reliable lightning arrester and counter system, the project:

✓ Reduces the risk of damage to radar and surveillance equipment.

✓ Enhances the safety of technical staff working on-site.

✓ Improves operational reliability of air traffic monitoring systems.

✓ Contributes to sustainable airport infrastructure by minimizing downtime and repair costs.

Conclusion

This project marks a significant step towards improving the resilience of Nepal’s aviation infrastructure. By protecting critical radar systems from lightning strikes, CAAN and TIACAO are ensuring safer skies and uninterrupted airport operations at Tribhuvan International Airport and beyond.
