Project Overview

Overview

The project was carried out for the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology (DHM), Nepal, located in Nagpokhari, Naxal, Kathmandu (reference MSI-PRJ-72-040). It covered the supply, delivery, installation, and commissioning of a nationwide Lightning Detection Network (LDN) to provide DHM with real-time lightning activity data for weather monitoring and early warning. The project was completed on 20 February 2018, over a duration of two years and one month.

Scope & Deliverables

  • Supply and delivery of lightning detection sensors installed at multiple regional sites
  • Deployment of Central Data Processing Units and Monitoring Servers at DHM's central facility
  • Installation and configuration of real-time data transmission systems integrated with DHM's meteorological database
  • Supply of networking and communication accessories, including antenna systems, UPS units, and protective grounding
  • Testing, calibration, and commissioning of the complete Lightning Detection Network
  • Training and handover to DHM technical staff for system operation and maintenance

Outcome

The Lightning Detection Network was tested, calibrated, and commissioned, then handed over to DHM along with training for its technical staff. The network now supplies DHM with continuous, real-time lightning activity data integrated into its meteorological database, supporting weather monitoring and early warning operations across Nepal.
